Apologies extended to UFCW Local 401
June 26, 2009 - 08:00am MST
A mix-up occured with caterers hired to put on the Local 95 BBQs at the 4 acute care hospital sites in Calgary.

The caterer were instructed to provide hot dogs, veggie and meat burgers, pop/water and chips at the 4 BBQs.

It wasn't until they arrived that it was pointed out that they were using Old Dutch potato chips. While this does not affect AUPE members, UFCW Local 401 is on strike at the Old Dutch facility.

To rectify this faux pas, an email and follow-up call was made to the Union rep for UFCW Local 401 to explain what had happened and to offer to come speak personally to their members on the picket line and apologize on behlaf of Local 95.

Nathalie Doerth, the Local 401 Union rep was quite receptive and on Friday, June 26 myself, Marilyn Dorozio, Chair and Karen Weiers, PE for Local 95 arrived at the Old Dutch facility to distribute Tim Horton's Coffee and doughnuts and speak to three small groups explaining what had happened and apologizing for the seeming lack of support for Union brothers and sisters. Our Union brothers and sisters were very receptive and welcoming and thanks us for coming to clarify things and acknowledge the situation.

The valuable lesson learned was to be more vigilant as to "what" is being provided for us and specifying that certain items not be used.

As Chair I would like to take this opportunity to request our members, friends and families (spread the word) to NOT support Old Dutch by purchasing their products. Our fellow Union brothers and sisters have now been out for 90 days and the only way that attention will be given to matters is if Old Dutch feels support for the workers in a lack of revenue from the public.

Thank you

Marilyn Dorozio, Chair
